OREANDA-NEWS. October 26, 2011.The NEC C&C Foundation today announced that the 2011 C&C Prize will be awarded to two groups. Dr. Akira Yoshino will represent Group A and Prof. Norman Abramson and Dr. Robert Metcalfe will represent Group B. Each recipient will be recognized with a certificate of merit and a plaque. Each group will also receive a cash award of ten million yen.

The C&C Prize was established in 1985 and is awarded to distinguished persons in recognition of outstanding contributions to R&D activities and pioneering work related to the integration of computers and communications technologies and the social impact of developments in these fields. This year's two recipient groups are outlined below.

The prize ceremony and acceptance speeches will be held on Monday, November 28 from 15:30 at the ANA InterContinental Tokyo.

For pioneering contributions to the development and commercialization of the Lithium-ion battery

<Achievement>
Dr. Akira Yoshino has driven the development of re-chargeable (secondary) Lithium-ion batteries (LIB) since the field's beginning in the 1980s and he has played a central role in their commercialization. Specifically, Dr. Yoshino's research demonstrated high-capacity rechargeable LIB that are stable and capable of supporting repeated charging and discharging. This was accomplished with electrodes, one of the main components of batteries, that Dr. Yoshino developed using LiCoO2 as the positive electrode and carbonaceous material as the negative electrode, mainstream ingredients of today's batteries. The C&C Prize was awarded to Dr. Yoshino in recognition of the leading role that LIB are expected to take in the progress of modern developments.

Group B
Prof. Norman Abramson Professor Emeritus, University of Hawaii
Dr. Robert M. Metcalfe Professor of Innovation, the University of Texas at Austin

For outstanding leadership in the invention, standardization and commercialization of Internet packet access, beginning with ALOHANET and then Ethernet

<Achievement>
Prof. Norman Abramson and Dr. Robert Metcalfe made decisive contributions to the development of ALOHANET, Ethernet, and related basic LAN technologies. Today, Ethernet is the most widely used LAN standard and has had immense impact on information technology since its initial appearance in the 1980s. The C&C Prize was awarded to Prof. Abramson and Dr. Metcalfe in recognition of the exceptional contributions their work makes to the development of today's networking field.
