OREANDA-NEWS. October 31, 2011. Tata Power, India’s largest integrated private power utility, has been facilitating various development initiatives for local communities around its areas of operations. One of the key endeavours is to develop skills for providing sustainable livelihood for the locals.

Keeping this objective in mind, for the last two years, Tata Power has been sponsoring students for their education at the Industrial Training Institute (ITI) under the employability skills programme initiated in the Naraj Marthapur region in Orissa. This has benefited around 40 students till date.

The objective of this initiative is to create avenues for employment post completion of the course undertaken. Many of these graduated students get self employed and the students who do not get employment are further supported by the company through professional counselling and campus selections inside as well as outside the institute.

Speaking about the various initiatives, Purushottam Thakur, general manager, projects, Tata Power, said, “We at Tata Power hope our efforts will benefit the students and the society at large. We intend to sponsor many more deserving students and help in shaping their future. This initiative is our step towards providing a better quality of life to the people of Naraj Marthapur.”

Recently, the company organised a campus recruitment drive for the graduating students, which attracted reputed companies such as Suzlon Energy which selected eleven students sponsored by Tata Power.

The need of this development intervention was felt as it was observed that a majority of graduate students faced difficulty in securing jobs. Thus, Tata Power not only initiated trained programmes for the students but also organised recruitment camps to build up employment opportunities.
