OREANDA-NEWS. March 15, 2012. Tata Steel  today awarded the Jyoti Fellowship Award to meritorious ST and SC students at a  ceremony held at Tribal Cultural Centre (TCC), Sonari.

A sum of Rs. 6,73,500/- was disbursed among 124  students under Jyoti Fellowship and Rs 9,54,000/  was disbursed among 85 students under Moodie fellowship (Renewal). TCC also endeavored to promote schooling of 20 girls from primitive  Sabar tribes. Beside this, 489  students have already been given Jyoti Fellowship Award in the last few months.

While addressing the gathering Mr  Bimlendra Jha, Vice President, Long Product said, "Tribal Cultural Society has  been doing commendable job in the areas related to education and preservation  of tribal culture and heritage."

Shri Raghunath Pandey, President,  Tata Worker's Union reiterated the initiatives taken up by Tata Steel for the  upliftment for the tribal in past and said, "Tata Steel has always been  concerned about development in the rural tribal areas. Jyoti fellowship is one  such step which is aimed at benefitting the youths of the tribal areas."

Mr Ankur Jain from Kanpur, a distributor of TISCON has sponsored for education of  20 primitive tribal girl child from Tata Steel's adopted sabar villages. Now  these 20 children have been admitted in Holy Cross School, Chowka in KG class.  He will continue the above fund in the name of "Kamla Jain Fellowship," till  they complete matriculation. He graced the occasion as a special guest. An MOU  was also singed with Mr Ankur Jain.

The  Jyoti fellowship has been funded by Tata Steel Ltd since 1974 and is awarded to  meritorious candidates every year. The objective behind the fellowship is to  provide financial assistance to meritorious students from economically backward  Schedule Tribe and Schedule Caste communities.  Jyoti Fellowship extends financial help to students from East Singhbhum, West  Singhbum and Seraikela Kharsawan district of Jharkhand and other operational  areas of Tata Steel include Orissa and Chhatisgarh.

On  this occasion, Mr Biren Bhuta Chief, Corporate Sustainability Services, Ms  Urmila Ekka, Hony  Secretary, TCS , Mr  Anil Oraon Head Corporate Relation Tata Steel and other TCS staff were also  present at the event.
