OREANDA-NEWS. September 14, 2012.  The IUEC has started to execute an Agreement signed in April with the Ukraine with the purpose to ensure the fulfillment of guaranteed supplies to the IUEC shareholders and elaborated its first stage – import from Ukraine of natural uranium in the form of U3O8 of the Ukrainian origin.

This material is going to be enriched and used for nuclear fuel fabrication for the Ukrainian NPPs at the facilities of the ROSATOM’s Fuel Company “TVEL”. The amount of the nuclear fuel to be produced is sufficient to overload approximately one half of an active zone of the 1000 MWt reactor.

The practical beginning of IUEC deliveries to its shareholders testifies the functionality of the guaranteed supplies mechanism offered to the world community by Russia and the Republic of Kazakhstan. In accordance with this mechanism any party entering the IUEC is provided by the guarantees for  nuclear fuel cycle goods and services supplies granted by the Government of the Russian Federation. This mechanism improves energy security of the participating countries and provides a diversification and optimum logistics through the use of capacities of all Russian enrichment plants (AECC, SCC, UECC, PA ECP). Foreign shareholders of the IUEC also granted the rights of a shareholder of the “open-type” joint stock company stipulated in the Russian legislation. In addition the application of the abovementioned mechanism of guaranteed supplies is aimed for strengthening the nonproliferation regime through the reduction of sensitive technology proliferation risks.
