OREANDA-NEWS. September 24, 2012. Mitsui & Co., Ltd. ("Mitsui," Head Office: Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo, President and CEO: Masami Iijima) will participate in the TOMODACHI Initiative, a public-private partnership established by the U.S. Government and the U.S.-Japan Council, a non-profit organization. Mitsui will donate approximately USD1 million (Approx. JҐ80mil.) and establish the TOMODACHI-Mitsui & Co., Ltd. Leadership Program, an exchange program for young leaders in Japan and the United States.

The TOMODACHI Initiative was inspired by the spirit of Operation Tomodachi, which was launched after the Great East Japan Earthquake as a joint assistance initiative by the U.S. military and the Japan Self-Defense Forces. TOMODACHI aims to support Japan's recovery from the Great East Japan Earthquake and invest in the next generation of Japanese and Americans in ways that strengthen cultural and economic ties, deepening the friendship between the United States and Japan over the long-term.
 TOMODACHI seeks to foster the next generation of Japanese and Americans, a "TOMODACHI generation" of young people who will become leaders in their countries.

Mitsui supports the objectives of the Tomodachi Initiative and will establish a new program focused on entrepreneurship and leadership development, which are priority areas for the TOMODACHI Initiative. Its goal is to build a network of people who can help to strengthen the Japan-U.S. relationship. Young Japanese and Americans who will visit each other's countries to participate in training programs with the aim of fostering better reciprocal understanding. Over a three-year period, Japanese participants, including people who played leading roles in recovery efforts in the disaster afflicted areas in Tohoku, will travel to the United States. Further details of the program will be announced later by the TOMODACHI Initiative.

Mitsui will continue to support recovery efforts in disaster areas through a variety of activities.
