OREANDA-NEWS. October 17, 2012. SCM has presented a second edition of Ukrainian Energy Index (UEI 2012).

UEI 2012 analyses final energy consumption in 26 regions of Ukraine within 2007-2010. All data for the research were provided by the State Statistics Committee of Ukraine. The methodology used in the research is based on the recommendations of the International Energy Agency and is highly assessed by international experts. Applying different energy efficiency metrics to industry, construction, agriculture, services sector, housing and utilities, transportation makes this approach innovative.

The rating shows that measures to bring energy efficiency in line with European standards would reduce final fuel and energy consumption in industry, agriculture, housing & utilities and services by 57%. These efforts would save Ukraine 31.9 Mtoe or €13.8bn in 2010 alone. This saving makes approximately 39 billion cu m of natural gas, which is more than Ukraine's annual gas imports from Russia. The shares of Ukraine's largest energy consumers, the industry and housing sector, make 58% and 29% accordingly.

Ukrainian Energy Index winners:

Vinnitsa, Kherson and Zakarpatye Oblasts are the best performers in the aggregate rating

Kharkov, Kiev and Kherson Oblasts lead in Industry sector

Odesa, Donetsk and Kiev Oblasts top the Services area

Zhitomir, Lvov and Chernovtsi Oblasts are ahead in the agriculture

Vinnitsa, Kirovograd and Kherson Oblasts lead in the housing and utilities sector

Lvov Oblast has made the biggest progress in the area of energy efficiency over 2007-2010.

"This is the second time we have compiled the rating and we pursue two goals. We want to draw the attention of the government, real economy and all the Ukrainians to the efficient use of energy resources and we want to show that it is vitally important to save the resources," noted Natalia Yemchenko, SCM's Director of Public Relations and Communications. "As a major national investor we realise the importance of investments in energy saving technologies and impact of energy efficiency on competitiveness of Ukrainian economy."

Nikolay Pashkevich, Chairman of State Agency on Energy Efficiency and Energy Conservation, said: "The biggest achievement of the UIE is a possibility to compare the level of energy effiency in the regions with consideration of economic stucture. This approach recommended by the International Energy Agency allows us to make exact estimates and compare the level of energy efficiency in Ukraine with the results of other more advanced economies.

Vlast Deneg magazine (media partner of the project) published the results of Ukrainian Energy Index on 11 October 2012.
