OREANDA-NEWS. December 12, 2012. Power Machines OJSC has manufactured and successfully tested a 1200 MW high-speed steam turbine. This turbine is the third from a series of four turbines designed for the installation at nuclear power plants being built in Russia. The turbine is to be installed at the second power unit of Novovoronezhskaya NPP-2.

Power Machines OJSC and Atomenergoprom OJSC signed contracts to supply complete sets of main turbine hall equipment for fitting out of Novovoronezhskaya NPP-2 and Leningradskaya NPP-2 in May 2008. Two power units with WWER-type reactors (each having an electric capacity of 1200 MW) will be built at each of the nuclear plants.

Under the terms of these contracts Power Machines are to provide engineering, manufacturing and supply of four complete sets of steam turbines, condensers and separate auxiliary equipment of turbine plant systems, as well as four complete sets of turbogenerators comprising auxiliary systems equipment, an excitation system and an exciter to Novovoronezhskaya NPP-2 and Leningradskaya NPP-2.

A prototype of the turbine designed for the first unit of Novovoronezhskaya NPP-2 was produced and presented to the client in December 2010. The turbine for the first power unit of Leningradskaya NPP-2 was produced in September 2011. Currently the company continues to produce assemblies of the second turbine for Leningradskaya NPP-2. The turbine is to be assembled and tested in Q3 2013.

1200 MW high-speed turbines for NPPs are new developments by Power Machines. They are designed for nuclear power units of a new generation with increased reliability and safety. At present these 1200 MW turbines are the most powerful high-speed steam turbines in the world. They have been designed and produced with the use of modern engineering solutions and technologies taking into account the experience gained during the production of turbines for Kudankulam NPP (India) and the turbines operation at Tianwan NPP (PRC) and Kalininskaya NPP.

Among the engineering solutions that increase the turbine's efficiency one can mention the use of a reinforced rotor blade of the last stage of the low-pressure cylinder having a length of 1,200 mm at increased steam flow. Currently these are blades of the maximum length used for high-speed turbines in the world and commercially produced of titanium alloy. The use of one-piece forged high and low-pressure rotor with coupling flanges, as well as the implementation of a number of passive and active measures to protect turbine components against erosion increase reliability of the equipment. Besides, a number of technical solutions ensure high maintainability of the turbine.

For over 30 years Power Machines enterprises have been designing and producing high-tech equipment for nuclear power plants. Today 1000 MW high-speed turbines produced by the company are running at NPP power units in Russia, Ukraine, China and Iran. Next power units have been already installed and will be started up in the near future at the nuclear power plant in India. Prototype models of 1200 MW high-speed turbine and generator are being installed to new power units at Novovoronezhskaya and Leningradskaya NPP-2.
