OREANDA-NEWS. Tata Power, India’s largest integrated power utility, has successfully commissioned lamella clarifier, a waste water recovery plant at power house No 6 as part of its World Water Day celebrations. The ground breaking ceremony for this project was held on June 5, 2012, coinciding with World Environment Day. DS Kudalkar, head, Jojobera station, Tata Power, Jamshedpur, commissioned the plant in the presence of officials and employees of Tata Power.

This unique waste water recovery plant is an effluent treatment plant (capacity 50M3/hr) with tube settler clarifier. The objectives of installing this plant is to filter and purify the waste water that is generated from the side stream filtration (SSF) plant, and reuse the purified water as alternative water for the cooling water systems at the plant. The newly commissioned plant has a potential to save 400cu metres of water per day, translating into a saving of close to 150,000cu metres of water each year.

The plant generates significant amount of high turbidity waste water on account of the backwash of SSF plant filter beds. Prior to installation of this clarifier, the backwash effluent of SSF plant was lost to drain as waste water.

Speaking on the occasion, Mr Kudalkar said, “As part of Tata Power’s environment conservation and sustainability efforts, the project was undertaken to help reduce wastage of water, in turn helping cut down overall water consumption at the plant. It further reinforces Tata Power’s commitment to implement the 3R principle (reuse, reduce, recycle) for the preservation of environment.”
