OREANDA-NEWS. May 29, 2013. Continuing the annual practice and general dedication to support law students and their development, SORAINEN Latvia has warmly welcomed the initiative of the Riga Graduate School of Law (RGSL) Student Association to organise an annual internal moot court competition for RGSL students.

This year the competition is organised in the format of the constitutional court procedure. The competition consists of a written round, where students are required to draft a memorial, and oral rounds – preliminary rounds, semi-finals and a final in which only the two best teams will participate.

The moot court competition case was drafted by SORAINEN Latvia associate Valts Nerets, a lecturer at the RGSL for comparative constitutional and administrative law. Valts will also be one of the three judges on the competition panel. SORAINEN Latvia will present a prize to the best moot court competition oralist.

At the same time, partner Agris Repss has volunteered to coach the law student team from the University of Latvia for the upcoming moot court in commercial and civil law. The oral rounds will take place on 1 June 2013 at the University of Latvia, when the teams will have to plead their arguments on matters of material civil law and civil procedure law. This year the teams had to prepare cassation appeals to the Supreme Court and construe arguments on a number of complex issues of civil law and procedural violations.

Participation in moot court competitions gives students valuable practical experience and the chance to apply theoretical knowledge in practice, to develop presentation skills and, most importantly, to gain the skills necessary to represent their clients in court.
