OREANDA-NEWS. July 10, 2013. MMC Norilsk Nickel launched one of the most important environmental projects Disposal of nickel refining acidic effluents in the Murmansk region. It will make it possible to neutralize the negative effect of nickel production on the ecosystem of water bodies adjacent to the industrial area of Kola MMC in Monchegorsk.

The project is based on a unique technology of complete evaporation of acidic effluents, i.e. liquid waste resulting from the use of chemicals in the production of electrolytic nickel. After effluents evaporation water gains characteristics of distilled water and removed harmful components, sodium sulphate and chloride, are turned into commercial products.

After project implementation sodium chloride and boron emissions will be reduced to zero, with sodium sulphate emissions reduced by almost 4 times.

“Norilsk Nickel consistently introduces advanced environmental technologies”, noted  Evgeny Yakovlev, the First Deputy General Director, “Acidic effluents disposal project implemented at Kola MMC  is as unique for Russia as sulfur dioxide disposal project launched by the Polar Division. Environmental problems solution in the regions of operation and minimization of the environmental impact is a key priority of Norilsk Nickel, and we are gradually performing this work”.

Construction works under the project are under way. The total cost of the project will amount to approx. RUB 1.5 bln. The Company is to implement the project within 2 years.
