OREANDA-NEWS. The San Francisco International Airport (SFO) was named as the winner of the San Francisco Chamber of Commerce's annual Excellence in Business Awards, known as “Ebbies.” The Airport was honored with the Kaiser Permanente Economic Development Award for job creation in the area.

“SFO is a powerful economic engine for the region, supporting over 150,000 jobs related to airport activities,” said Airport Direction John L. Martin. “We are proud to be recognized by the San Francisco Chamber of Commerce for our contribution to local economies.

”The Kaiser Permanente Economic Development Award recognizes companies or organizations that substantially contribute to the economic vitality of San Francisco. Awards were presented on October 3, 2013 at a San Francisco Chamber of Commerce event celebrating the Bay Area's visionary entrepreneurs, business leaders and exemplary corporate citizens. Approximately 900 business and community leaders were in attendance.

SFO recently released the results of a study into the Airport's economic impact in 2012, demonstrating that SFO directly accounted for USD 5.4 billion in business activity supporting 33,580 jobs at the airport. When off-site business activities directly dependent on Airport services are included, SFO contributed USD 31.2 billion in business sales with 153,000 jobs.

In May 2013, SFO unveiled a Capital Improvement Plan, which is expected to generate an additional 36,000 new jobs over the next 10 years.
