OREANDA-NEWS. April 21, 2014. At session the Government of the Republic approved merger of the Estonian Maritime Academy with the Tallinn University. The Maritime Academy will become a TUT College, headed by Director and located in Tallinn at 101 Kopli.

The Estonian Maritime Academy will merge with the Tallinn University of Technology on 1 August 2014. From that date all the students and continuing students acquiring professional higher education and in Master’s studies shall be deemed to be students and continuing students of TUT and all the rights and obligations of TTU students and continuing students shall extend to them. 

„The merger enables to enhance cooperation with the faculties, departments and chairs of the Tallinn University of Technology in general and basic subjects. The cooperation will provide significantly wider opportunities for maritime research and development, as well as increase the potential of academic maritime education and improve the efficiency and quality of studies”,  the Government of the Republic confirmed in its decision.

The function of the Maritime Academy will be providing professional higher maritime education and maritime Master’s studies, organise continuing education, promote studying, research and development activities and provide the required knowledge-based services in the maritime field.
The vocational training department of the Maritime Academy will not merge with TUT. A new vocational educational institution, the Nautical College, will be established before merger of the Tallinn Technical University and the Maritime Academy with whom the Maritime Academy will cooperate extensively.

The Maritime Academy will continue provision of education to its students in the curricula of fishing and fish processing technology, refrigerating equipment, ship engines, port and shipping management, navigation officer, shiphandling and maritime safety and navigation.
