OREANDA-NEWS. According to the latest rating released by JSC RusHydro in March 2014, among 40 regions of Russia the Republic of Karelia and the Murmansk Oblast are the leaders in the absolute number of HPPs.

The Republic of Karelia is in first place, 19 hydroelectric power plants operate on the territory of the republic, 17 of which are part of the JSC TGC-1, the leading generator and supplier of electric and heat energy in the Northwest Region of Russia.

Hydroelectric power plants of JSC TGC-1 in Karelia are distributed amongst three cascades: the Vyg HPPs Cascade, the Suna HPPs Cascade and the Kem HPPs Cascade. The total installed capacity - 633.7 MW.

It is here, that the oldest hydroelectric power plant in Russia is located, working on original equipment of 1903 - Hamekoski HPP. Also the structure of JSC TGC-1 includes the “first-born” of the GOELRO plan of the republic - Kondopozhskaya HPP, the building of which is recognized as an architectural monument and is protected by the state.

The second place of the rating is rightly taken by Murmansk Oblast. These are four cascades of JSC TGC-1: the Niva HPPs Cascade, the Tuloma HPPs Cascade, the Serebryanskiye HPPs Cascade and the Paz HPPs Cascade. Total capacity of the 17 HPPs of JSC TGC-1 on the Kola Peninsula is 1,594.6 MW.

Murmansk Oblast has a record number of underground HPPs, among them - the northernmost underground diversion hydroelectric power plant of the world, Borisoglebskaya HPP and the most powerful hydroelectric power plant of the Kola Peninsula - Nivskaya HPP-3.
