OREANDA-NEWS. September 26, 2014. The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) will provide a financial support worth 400,000 dollars, to "strengthen the food safety sector in Moldova" for 2014-2015. Agriculture and Food Industry Minister Vasile Bumacov made statements to this effect today.

According to Bumacov, FAO’s support was very important for Moldova, "since it helps to align the food safety laws with European standards."

"FAO will provide technical assistance to the National Agency for Food Safety (ANSA). When this structure meets all European requirements, we will have a better chance for our products to penetrate the European market," said Bumacov.

For his part, ANSA Director Ion Sula said this financial support was focused on monitoring the food safety capacity "beginning with seed and ending with the finished product."

FAO Regional Office for Europe and Central Asia’s Food Safety and Consumer Protection Officer Eleonora Dupouy said this support would "increase the risk analysis capabilities, which provides for risk assessment, prevention and tackling the risk with consumers and economic agents."

Moldova joined the Food and Agriculture Organisation in 1995. FAO has opened a regional office in Moldova in last April.
