OREANDA-NEWS. Powertech Transformers, a subsidiary of the JSE listed Altron Group has re-established its position as the only South African manufacturer designing, building and testing arc furnace transformers locally. Arc furnace transformers are used in industrial plants where large quantities of electricity are required to run the plant's furnaces.

The drive behind the project was an order from Tronox Mineral Sands (Pty) Ltd to produce two arc furnace transformers of 60MVA 33/0.44-0.83kV for their mine in Namakwa Sands. The R42m manufacturing mandate enabled Powertech Transformers to reaffirm its competency in arc furnace transformers and enhance its product offering.

Bernard Meyer, CEO of Powertech Transformers says, "Powertech Transformers is a proudly South African innovator, firmly in support of the National Development Plan 2030's initiative to grow the manufacturing base within our own borders. This project also represents an important milestone in our endeavors to capture new markets. We are re-entering the arc furnace market and have convincingly advanced in terms of technology and pricing."

Meyer continues, "Currently there are no other local suppliers with the capabilities to design, build or even test arc furnace transformers. We are proud to be contributing significantly, not only to job creation, but also in ensuring the continuance of local innovation through the SA manufacture of market-relevant technology and products."
