OREANDA-NEWS. Local community groups have received a boost in support from Rio Tinto Alcan Weipa’s community sponsorship and partnership programme.

Weipa Wildlife Care and the Weipa Volunteer Marine Rescue each received five thousand dollars towards the continued community service they provide through the efforts of volunteers.

Weipa Volunteer Marine Rescue executive Brendon Fay said “Volunteer Marine Rescue supports the boating community that enjoy the waters near Weipa.

“As a volunteer organisation, we’re grateful for the donation from Rio Tinto Alcan and will be putting the money towards an emergency backup generator for the Volunteer Marine Rescue base.”

Rio Tinto Alcan Weipa is also sponsoring two upcoming local events to kick off their fundraising efforts, including the Weipa Community Centre’s International Women’s Day dinner and Weipa Relay for Life.

Rio Tinto Alcan Weipa community relations manager Brad Welsh said “Rio Tinto Alcan Weipa is pleased to support a wide range of community initiatives through our sponsorship and partnership programme.

“Both the Volunteer Marine Rescue and Weipa Wildlife Care make a sustainable contribution to the Western Cape region and closely align with the Rio Tinto values of health, safety and environment.

“We’re also proud to support local community events like the Relay for Life and International Women’s Day dinner which raise valuable contributions towards the good work of the Queensland Cancer Council and restoration work to the Community Centre’s Op Shop.

“It’s encouraging to see so many great community groups in Weipa and our sponsorship and partnership programme is just one way we support their programmes to deliver beneficial outcomes for the region.”
