OREANDA-NEWS. The largest network upgrade ever undertaken by Southern Electric Power Distribution (‘SEPD’) has been completed on schedule.

The ?40m project has seen two brand new, state-of-the-art substations built in Bracknell and Camberley, with over 13km of new underground cable laid between them.

SEPD Project Manager, James Rooney, explains more: “Due to its proximity to London, the area around Bracknell and Camberley is very popular both for businesses and their staff, and also with commuters. All of this leads to an increase in the number of properties and customers, which in turn means that we have to make sure that our network is able to cope with the increase in the demand for electricity. By building these two new substations and installing the upgraded cables, we have been able to ‘future proof’ the local network, so that it can continue to give our existing customers and also any new ones, a safe, secure and reliable supply of electricity for many years to come.”

With the new underground cables being installed, we were also able to remove four pylons in Bracknell, which previously carried the power lines overhead. Part of this part of the project was carried out on 20 March, the day of the solar eclipse, and so we went along to meet James Rooney on site and film the teams in action; click here to see our video.
