OREANDA-NEWS. Power management company Eaton, an EPA 2015 ENERGY STAR® Partner of the Year, is shining a light on four reasons airports across the globe are flipping the switch to light-emitting diode (LED) solutions as part of National Aviation Day on August 19. Airports are making significant investments in LED technology to better illuminate paths for the millions of travelers who come through their terminals each year, enhancing safety while reducing energy intake by millions of watts annually.

“National Aviation Day underscores the importance of innovation and development in advancing airline travel and improving the passenger experience,” said Mark Eubanks, president, Eaton’s Lighting Division. “Replacing inefficient lighting with LEDs is one of the most practical building upgrades available today and Eaton’s innovative solutions are leading the charge in enhancing airports all over the world, from massive parking decks to busy runways and terminals for better safety and energy efficiency.”

Eaton’s Top Four Reasons Airports are Switching to LED Lighting Solutions:

Safety – Enhancing lighting in pedestrian areas and parking lots with LEDs provide uniform illumination, minimizing dark spots in high traffic and pedestrian areas. As the fifth busiest airport in the U.S., Denver International Airport recently replaced 5,400 light fixtures with LEDs across 5.1 million square feet of parking garage space.
Energy Efficiency – Many international airports are taking advantage of the energy savings LEDs can provide. As part of an $8.5 billion modernization plan, Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) recently completed LED street lighting upgrades outside the Central Terminal Area, improving the experience for travelers and helping to cut power consumption by 48 percent compared to its previous luminaires.
Longevity – LEDs have better endurance, which is why Detroit Metropolitan Airport replaced more than 6,000 parking garage fixtures with new LED technology. Guaranteeing lighting levels for at least 10 years, the LED fixtures are designed to last more than 60,000 hours. This results in fewer lamp replacements and better reliability, another important consideration for parking garage safety.
Aesthetics – LEDs are a perfect fit for modern airports and building structures. By providing the ideal blend of light quality and performance, designers are able to illuminate key architectural elements throughout a space. Mumbai’s Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport has implemented a unique LED luminaire designed specifically for wall grazing applications at its new T2 terminal to enhance decorated carpets, artwork and bold designs, while providing great visual elements for the terminal’s more than 40 million annual visitors.
