OREANDA-NEWS The European Commission is ready to support discussions in the matter of prolongation of the agreement about the transit of Russian gas through Ukraine to the European Union after 2024, said Tim McPhee, thr spokesman of the EC press service.

"Ukraine is a reliable transit country. The EU has contributed to the current transit agreement which will last until 2024. We are ready to facilitate discussions about the prolongation of this agreement", - he said.

At the same time, it is noted that the EU as a whole wants to significantly reduce the use of fossil fuels, including gas, and increase the consumption of renewable energy, and by 2050 become a climate neutral region.

"We are actively working with Ukraine to support its transition to cleaner energy sources such as sun and wind", - McPhee added.

"The EC has taken note of the statement by the governments of Germany and the United States", - he said.

Ukraine, in accordance with Article 274 of the Association Agreement with the EU, officially initiates consultations with the European Commission and the Federal Republic of Germany about Nord Stream 2 which, it was alleged, threatens the security of Ukraine and violates the principles of diversification of the EU Energy Union. The Foreign Ministry has already sent corresponding notes to Brussels and Berlin. This was announced by the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine Dmitro Kuleba.

"Regarding the association agreement, we have not yet received an official request. But we have taken note of the statements made", - said Tim McPhee .
