OREANDA-NEWS. German Chancellor Olaf Scholz called the decision to stop the Russian gas pipeline Nord Stream 2 timely. It is reported by RIA Novosti.

He recalled that Germany receives gas from Norway, the Netherlands, Russia through pipelines through Ukraine, Belarus and Poland, as well as through the Baltic Sea via Nord Stream 1. That is, "SP2" would become the fourth pipe.

Scholz noted that during negotiations with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Moscow on February 15, he stated that the decision to stop Nord Stream 2 would be made, which was subsequently announced publicly.

“We were prepared to stop the certification process if it came to war, and ... re-prepare an analysis of the threats to energy security in connection with this project,” said the German Chancellor.

Earlier, an official representative of the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs said that the German government had succumbed to the temptation to use the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline as leverage on the Russian Federation.

Zakharova stressed that the Russian Federation considers “unacceptable and unworthy from the point of view of international commercial law the decision of the German authorities to terminate the process of certification of the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline.”
