OREANDA-NEWS. September 05, 2016. In conjunction with ABB's 125th anniversary in Switzerland and due to the large number of visitors at the opening of the Gotthard base tunnel last June, ABB is taking its special technology pavilion on tour. The traveling exhibition was officially opened today in Biasca and will visit four more Swiss cities between now and the end of October.

Between September 3 and October 29, ABB will take its "ABB on Tour" pavilion to Lucerne, Zurich, Lugano and Baden. It will be open to visitors for several days in each city. The exhibits, which cover an area of about 200 square meters, will enable visitors to delve into the fascinating world of ABB technologies and get a first-hand look at innovative technical solutions for transportation, industry, building systems and the power supply sector. At the heart of the exhibit is a 360° video screen that takes viewers on a journey into the world of ABB. The film illustrates the exhibit's themes: urban mobility, energy efficiency, automation, robotics, the Internet of Things, Services and People (IoTSP) and gives viewers insight into ABB's vision of the future. ABB will also present its expertise in areas such as electromobility and research and development; e.g., for intelligent buildings and the rail sector (rolling stock).

125 years of ABB Switzerland – a success story made in Switzerland
ABB has contributed to technical progress in Switzerland and around the world for 125 years in the fields of energy efficiency and boosting industrial productivity. This also applies to railway innovations that enable sustainable mobility. ABB predecessor companies also made substantial contributions toward electrifying Switzerland's railways. At the beginning of the 20th century, BBC electrified the Simplon and old L?tschberg tunnels, as well as the Gotthard tunnel, which opened in 1882. The company thereby made a major contribution to the important job of expanding the key passes through the Alps.

The fact that the traveling exhibition was kicked off in Biasca is no coincidence. Biasca is the start of the Gotthard base tunnel passage from south to north toward Erstfeld. The world's longest railway tunnel contains a broad range of innovative and energy efficient ABB technologies. ABB's contribution ensures that the infrastructure receives power and the tunnel is ventilated – in effect, supplying the ‘muscle and lungs’ of the 100-year-old tunnel. The scope of supply includes about 300 transformers and 900 switchgear systems – in fact, the Gotthard base tunnel relies on more of these components than the entire distribution grid of many midsized Swiss cities, such as St. Gallen.

ABB supplies numerous technologies for a variety of applications in the mobility sector, which includes railways, subways, electric buses and electric cars. In addition to the power supply sector and industry, transportation and infrastructure is one of ABB's three main customer segments, and sustainable mobility is a major focus of the company's Next-Level strategy.
