OREANDA-NEWS  The National Union of Sugar Beet Producers has appealed to the recently elected Minister of Agriculture of Poland, Czeslaw Sekerski, with a request to impose an embargo on sugar imports from Ukraine.

"In Poland, it is necessary to immediately impose an embargo on sugar imports from Ukraine, as the National Union of Sugar Beet Producers has asked Czeslaw Sekerski, Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development," RMF24 radio station quotes the statement of the association. It also notes that Poland's neighboring countries, in particular Hungary and Slovakia, have already introduced similar measures against Ukraine.

According to Polish agricultural producers, sugar imports from Ukraine to the EU countries increased several times due to temporary measures to abolish customs duties on exports of Ukrainian agricultural products, which were introduced by Brussels. A sharp increase in supply from Ukraine has affected the decline in sugar prices in Poland over the past few months, which threatens the position of Polish producers in the European market, Polish farmers emphasize.

In May, the EU extended the abolition of duties on exports of goods from Ukraine for a year. In April, Poland, along with Bulgaria, Hungary, Romania and Slovakia, banned the import of grain from Ukraine into their territory in order to avoid a collapse in prices on the domestic market. Kiev, interested in selling its products, offers them schemes for coordinating export shipments, and is also negotiating with neighbors to simplify logistics procedures and border controls for transit goods.
