OREANDA-NEWSVehicle traffic in the Serbian capital was blocked on Tuesday as a result of a protest action by Belgrade taxi drivers protesting against the Serbian counterpart of the Uber service - CarGo.

The action participants aggravated the situation by moving the time of street blocking to the beginning of the evening rush hour. The action started at 14:00 local time (15:00 Moscow time) and will continue until 17:00 (18:00 Moscow time). "Due to the general strike of taxi drivers, the call service does not accept orders", the press service of the largest passenger transportation company Pink told the Russian media.

According to the existing law, in Serbia the number of licenses for taxi drivers is limited, which leads to high prices for the service. For example, the cost of a trip with an official Belgrade carrier is 2-3 times higher than the cost of a similar trip in Moscow. As a result, carriers without a license flooded the market. According to experts, about 300 thousand people signed up for CarGo in Serbia, and about 5 thousand drivers work in the service. The protesters say they intend to repeat it daily from 13 to 15 hours. According to them, the protest will continue until the existing law is put into practice.
