OREANDA-NEWS. The OSCE Chairperson-in-Office reported on Thursday that Swedish Foreign Minister Anne Linde and the organization's secretary general Helga Schmid called for a peaceful return of order and respect for the democratic process in Washington.

According to Ann Linde, "the outcome of democratic elections as well as constitutional principles must be respected." Helga Schmid said she was alarmed by this attack on democratic institutions and principles that they are witnessing in Washington today, according to the OSCE press office.

On January 6, supporters of the current US President Donald Trump, who gathered in Washington to demonstrate in support of him, stormed the congress building, interrupting the meeting, which was supposed to approve the results of the last elections. Law enforcers used tear gas and stun grenades.

Democrat Joe Biden is considered the elected president based on the results of the last vote, but Trump stubbornly does not want to admit defeat.

Cyprus Foreign Minister Nikos Christodoulides, who wrote on his Twitter account, agrees with OSCE representatives that he "is watching with bewilderment the events unfolding in Washington. It is a fundamental axiom of democracy that the will of the people, freely expressed in elections, must be respected."
