OREANDA-NEWS. The population of Russia has reached 145.9 million people, which is 2 million more than in 2019. This follows from the materials of the United Nations Organization.

Yelena Yegorova, a head of the laboratory for quantitative methods of researching regional development at the Plekhanov Russian University of Economics, said that this change in figures is explained by the fact that the organization has included residents of the Republic of Crimea in the statistical data. “The only thing that can be an explanation is that they simply counted without Crimea until last year, and in 2020 they included Crimea in the population of Russia. 2 million is just the population of Crimea,” she told the news agency RIA Novosti.

In 2019, the UN counted 143.9 million people in Russia, which differed from the figure of domestic statistics, 146.8 million. In 2020, the UN reported of 145.9 million residents, while Russian data shows 146.6 million people as of June 1.
