OREANDA-NEWS Two envelopes in which the staff looking through incoming mail to the Pentagon, allegedly found toxic substance ricin, intended to the Secretary of defense James Mattis, as well as the chief of staff of the Navy Admiral John Richardson.

This information was reported on Tuesday by CNN, citing sources. Mattis is currently on a trip to Europe, Richardson take speaking at an event in Washington on Tuesday.

Envelopes arrived on Monday to the mail sorting center of military Department of the country. It is located in the area adjacent to the Pentagon building. There were no envelopes in the building of Pentagon. Evacuation in connection with the incident was not carried out.

As explained by the official representative of the Pentagon, no danger to the US Department of defense employees there. All mail received on Monday at the centre is currently in quarantine.

Envelopes suspected of containing ricin have been handed over to the FBI. Employees of the Department will conduct additional checks and try to identify the sender.

Ricin, a protein toxin of plant origin, are extremely toxic to humans. Ricin is a white, odorless powder, highly soluble in water. If ingested, it causes nausea, vomiting and internal bleeding of the stomach and intestines, followed by failure of the liver, spleen and kidneys, and death by collapse of the circulatory system.

On the same day, the US Secret Service intercepted a suspicious envelope addressed to President Donald Trump, said in a statement by the organization responsible for the protection of the first person of the state.

"The Secret Service can confirm the receipt of a suspicious envelope addressed to the President on October 1, 2018. The envelope was not received in the White house, and never got to the White house, " the statement said.

However, no additional information was provided by the Secret Service. They only noted that law enforcement agencies are investigating the incident.
