OREANDA-NEWS. The US refused to buy Greenland. This statement was made by US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken during a visit to the autonomous territory of Denmark.

He told reporters that he visited the largest island on Earth to strengthen the partnership. However, Washington had no plans to negotiate a deal, the Russia 24 TV channel reports.

The news of the possible purchase of Greenland emerged during the presidency of Donald Trump. He discussed the idea with advisers who found it cost-effective. Then the White House said that they are ready to pay subsidies to Denmark in the amount of $ 600 million every year.

In April 2020, it was reported that the United States decided to help Greenland with money - to allocate $ 12.1 million in order to thereby contribute to the economic growth of the island. This gesture irritated the Danish authorities, who considered the American plans "provocative interference" in the country's affairs. Washington explained that their main goal is to contain Russia and China, which are increasingly developing the Arctic. Copenhagen was not satisfied with this answer. Denmark said that the United States is clearly "crossing the line" and the proposal of the American authorities could lead to disagreements with allies.

However, in Greenland then they said that "they are not for sale." The island with a population of 56 thousand people is part of Denmark with the rights of broad autonomy.
