OREANDA-NEWS. The Italian football championship should be suspended due to the wide spread of coronavirus infection among players. This was claimed on September 30 by Undersecretary at the Ministry of Health, Sandra Zampa, on the air of Radio Capital.

“The protocol that we signed in relation to Serie A clearly indicates that the championship should be suspended. When a large number of infected people are detected, the championship should be interrupted. Firstly, the footballers cannot play, and secondly, there is a risk of infecting others,” the politician said.

On September 28, the football club Genoa announced the identification of 14 infected players and staff members. Prior to that, the striker of the Milan, Zlatan Ibrahimovic, reported that he was infected with COVID-19. Several cases have also been registered in other teams.

Currently, the Italian authorities are inclined not to open the stadiums for fans, even for a quarter of the capacity.

The previous season of Italian football championship was interrupted in March due to a pandemic and was played from June to August with empty stands. The authorities allowed collective training only in the end of May. Now up to 1 thousand spectators are allowed at sporting events.
