OREANDA-NEWS In 2023, Russia exported agricultural products worth $283 million to Indonesia, which is six times more than a year earlier. In physical terms, supplies increased 22 times, to more than 1.1 million tons, according to the Agroexport center under the Ministry of Agriculture of the Russian Federation.

A significant increase in indicators was due to wheat exports, which resumed in May 2023 after a 2.5-year break. From May to December, 1.06 million tons of wheat worth $257 million were shipped to Indonesia.

"Last season, Indonesia returned to the pool of importers of Russian wheat and this season ranks sixth. Now Indonesia buys both wheat with 12.5% protein and 11.5%, and Russia offers the most competitive prices for these items," the Rusagrotrans analytical center said in a statement, cited by Agroexport.

In turn, for Indonesia, the Russian Federation is the second wheat supplier after Australia this season. "In general, Indonesia is one of the world's three largest wheat importers, along with China and Egypt. Currently, the country's needs reach 10.5-11 million tons and will only grow, while wheat is practically not grown in Indonesia. Russia is quite capable of pushing competitors in the Indonesian market further," the analytical center is confident.

Indonesia is also among the top 3 leading buyers of millet from the Russian Federation - more than 18 thousand tons worth $6.8 million in 2023. In addition, this country is the second importer of Russian coriander after India. In 2023, more than 15 thousand tons worth $8.7 million were shipped to the Indonesian market.

Russia also exported 2.5 thousand tons of frozen fish worth $9.9 million to Indonesia last year. The main volume fell on frozen cod.

"Indonesia is a major exporter of fish and seafood, but imports from Russia those types of aquatic biological resources that it does not produce itself - Pacific cod, sockeye salmon, pink salmon, sturgeon caviar. Despite the fact that the share of Russian supplies in Indonesian fish imports does not exceed 5% in weight and money, the Russian Federation ranks 6-7 among suppliers of fish and seafood to this country," said Alexander Panin, chairman of the Fish Union, quoted by Agroexport.

According to him, in 2023, the Indonesians also bought more than 100 kg of Russian sturgeon caviar. "On the horizon of 3-5 years, subject to a marketing campaign, the main commercial resource of the Russian Federation - Russian pollock and products from it - has a chance to find a buyer in Indonesia," Panin believes.

According to Agroexport, by 2030, the Russian Federation can increase the supply of agricultural products to Indonesia to more than $ 650 million. In addition to grain and fish, promising products also include meat and dairy products, for which the Indonesian market is still closed.
