OREANDA-NEWS. The portal ProPublica reported that in the American state of Michigan, a schoolgirl was sent to a juvenile detention centre for not doing homework and violating probation.

In 2019, a 15-year-old black girl named Grace was accused of assaulting her mother and stealing. She was assigned a probationary period, one of the conditions of which was to do school homework.

The teenager suffers from attention deficit disorder. Grace said that she felt unmotivated and depressed, and struggled from distance learning, which schools switched to due to the coronavirus pandemic.

In May, an Oakland County’s judge sent Grace to a juvenile detention centre, claiming that she did not live up to expectations in school performance and called her a threat to society.

Oakland County head David Coulter informed that he spoke with a judge and believes that the case should be reviewed.

Meanwhile, hundreds of students in Michigan are protesting against Grace’s imprisonment.
