OREANDA-NEWS. Chad Wolf, acting US Secretary of Homeland Security, announced that the borders with Mexico and Canada will not be open until September 21. The American government closed borders on March 18 due to the wide spread of a new coronavirus infection.

Canadian Public Safety Minister Bill Blair noted that Ottawa supports this idea because of the growing number of registered cases of COVID-19 in the southwestern part of the United States.

Cross-border workers such as truck drivers, medical personnel and airline crews are allowed to cross the border as before. Americans or Canadians returning home are also allowed to enter.

According to the Johns Hopkins University, at present, there are more than 5.5 million cases of COVID-19 registered in the United States, 522 thousand in Mexico, 124 thousand in Canada.
