Agronomists told about the conditions of banana cultivation in Russia

OREANDA-NEWS Representatives of botanical gardens and agricultural scientists from different regions told RIA Novosti under what conditions it will be possible to grow bananas on an industrial scale in Russia. First of all, we are talking about the construction of large greenhouses, for example, in the central part of the country and in the Urals. At the same time, Krasnodar experts suggest replacing bananas in the diet of Russians with fruits of the asimin tree that taste similar.
Banana shipments to Russia from Ecuador, their traditional and main supplier, decreased after the Rosselkhoznadzor restricted supplies from five exporters from this country due to a dangerous pest, the humpback fly. At the same time, the first shipments of bananas from India to Russia began and, according to RIA Novosti, the country can completely replace Ecuadorian products on the Russian market. Indonesian producers also declare their readiness to supply bananas to the Russian market. At the same time, experiments with the cultivation of tropical fruit have been going on in the Russian Federation for a long time.
The head of the Ufa lemonarium, Farida Sadykova, told RIA Novosti that Bashkir foresters are ready to grow bananas for the Russian market. According to her, acuminata varieties grow in lemonaria, which are not inferior to imported ones. But there is little space in greenhouses, acuminata is grown only as an experiment.
"Of course, it is possible to grow bananas on an industrial scale in Russia. Although heating is expensive, but if you build block greenhouses, invest money, then these efforts will quickly pay off. In almost the second year, bananas will begin to bear fruit... I was even invited to Uganda to establish a banana plantation. Before that, Ufa specialists and I laid such plantations in Turkmenistan, we have experience, " Sadykova said.
The Perm Scientific Research Institute of Agriculture was more skeptical about the idea of growing bananas in Russia. The director of the institute, Ivan Ogorodov, believes that the climatic conditions of the Perm Region are unsuitable for this, the cost of heating and lighting when cultivated indoors will make the process unprofitable.
