OREANDA-NEWS. In the season from October 2019 to the end of September 2020, Russia will supply almost 1.8 million tons of sugar abroad and will rank seventh in world exports. This follows from the presentation of the International Sugar Organization with the May forecast of the situation on the global sugar market. Previously, Russia was not among the top ten exporters.

During the current season, sugar exports from Russia exceed the supply from Cuba (1 million tons) and the European Union (1.1 million tons). Russian sugar exports will more than quadruple. Brazil will be a leader in supplies with 24 million tons.

According to the Union of Sugar Producers of Russia, in the previous season, 277 thousand tons of sugar were delivered abroad, and during the current season, according to data for July, almost 1.3 million tons. The increase in sugar exports is connected to a large harvest of sugar beet. According to the Federal State Statistics Service of Russia, in 2019 the harvest of this crop increased by 29 %, reaching 54.3 million tons.
