OREANDA-NEWS. Yuriy Vitrenko, the chief executive officer of the national company Naftogaz of Ukraine, said that Russia has no contracts or negotiations on Ukraine’s direct purchase of gas.

In theory, Kiev can buy fuel from Russia directly: it had “legislative opportunities” for this before, but now there are no “practical reasons for discussing this,” Vitrenko noted. According to him, Ukraine does not buy Russian gas directly not because Kiev made such a “heroic decision,” but because Moscow stopped supplying it. The task of Naftogaz is to find alternative sources of gas, as Vitrenko explained.

Naftogaz and Gazprom signed an agreement on gas transit on December 30. Its financial details were not disclosed. However, it is known that the Russian side is committed to supply 225 billion cubic meters over 5 years. 65 billion should pass through the Ukrainian gas transportation system in 2020.
