OREANDA-NEWS The Ministry of Energy has proposed a plan to reduce electricity demand in Russia. According to the plan, citizens will need to switch to commercial enterprise tariffs in order to participate in the initiative.

The Ministry is also proposing that households turn off appliances during peak load periods, such as in the evening and on weekends. This is intended to unload the electricity system and reduce the need for expensive, high-capacity power plants.

However, the cost of using commercial enterprise tariffs is expected to be higher than regulated rates, with an average increase of 34%. In return, residents will receive a reward for their participation.

It is anticipated that the draft of the relevant Federal Law will be developed by the start of 2025, although further details are not yet available. After attracting citizens to the electricity demand management market, apartment or house owners will need to "voluntarily give up the purchase of electricity under regulated tariffs," according to the draft plan. Despite this, the department believes that this deal will be beneficial. We plan to involve young people and environmental activists in the experiment through mobile services.

At the end of 2023, the Russian government approved measures that oblige regions to switch to new electricity tariffs. It was explained that tariffs will increase with increased consumption. As an alternative to switching the regions over to a new system, it was suggested to subsidize tariffs for the population from their budgets.
