OREANDA-NEWS Avtozavod Saint Petersburg LLC (the former Nissan site) will produce several models of passenger cars under the Xcite brand, the start of sales of which on the Russian market is scheduled for the first half of the year, the company's press service reported.

The automobile plant has already assembled the first batch of several thousand cars. "There is an accumulation of inventory to ensure the start of sales in the spring of 2024. Work continues on the formation of a new brand team and negotiations with the largest dealer networks in Russia," the company said in a press release.

The medium-term development plan for the site in St. Petersburg involves the launch of production of "a number of models in close cooperation with international partners." "This will allow us to provide more choice in the new car market in Russia, bring the automotive manufacturing sector in the region back to a high level, save and increase jobs," the company notes.

The company does not specify details about what the model range will be and who is the foreign partner of the project.

The assets of the St. Petersburg automobile plant, which now plans to produce Xcite brand cars, in the past belonged to Nissan, whose company operated from 2009 to 2022. After the decision of the Japanese concern to leave the Russian Federation, the plant was transferred for a symbolic cost in favor of the Federal State Unitary Enterprise NAMI subordinated to the Ministry of Industry and Trade with a repurchase option. The state-owned enterprise later sold 99% of the plant to AvtoVAZ as part of a symbolic deal.

Having become a production partner of the plant, AvtoVAZ began large-scale assembly of cars under the Lada brand in the summer of 2023. The first model at the new stage of the company's work was the front-wheel drive Lada X-Cross 5 urban crossover with a 160-horsepower turbocharged engine and a seven-speed automatic transmission. It was assembled based on the model of the Chinese carmaker FAW - FAW Bestune T77. However, as the Russian Automobile telegram channel reported in the fall, the partnership between AvtoVAZ and FAW did not work out, and the site in St. Petersburg stopped assembling. AvtoVAZ did not comment on the situation.

Currently, the owners of Avtozavod Saint Petersburg LLC are not disclosed.
