OREANDA-NEWS. Explosions were heard near the Syrian port city of Latakia. The reason was Israeli airstrikes, the Syrian news agency «Sana» reported on Wednesday, May 5. According to the media, one of the shells hit a warehouse of plastic products.

One person was killed and two others were injured, «Sana» reports. It is also reported, that the Syrian air defense systems in the area of Latakia and the other port of Tartus shot down several Israeli missiles. Israel has not yet commented on the incident.

Earlier, on April 22, Israel and Syria launched missile strikes. According to the Israeli side, then after the alarm signal from the Syrian territory, a surface-to-air missile was fired at Israel, which fell in the Negev region in the south of the country. In response, the Israeli army attacked the Syrian batteries.

In Damascus, it was claimed, that the Israeli missiles were intercepted. The incident was the most serious military clash between Syria and Israel in recent years, the AP news agency noted.
