Italian Astronaut Photographed Smoke from Forest Fires in the Amazon from Space

“Smoke stretching for thousands of kilometers from dozens of fires caused by human activities in the forests of the Amazon,” wrote Parmitano.
Since the beginning of the year, a record number of natural fires have been recorded in the Amazonian forests in Brazil - about 73 thousand (for the whole of 2018, 39 thousand fires were recorded).
Amazonian forests cover an area of about 7 million square kilometers and are located in nine states - Brazil, Peru, Colombia, Venezuela, Ecuador, Bolivia, Guyana, Suriname and French Guiana. Amazonia produces 20% of all oxygen on Earth.
