OREANDA-NEWS The Cabinet of Ministers of Japan has approved a plan to export new generation fighter jets, which were developed in collaboration with Great Britain and Italy, to other countries, according to reports from The Associated Press. This decision will help Japan participate in a joint fighter jet project, build up its arms industry, and strengthen its position in global security. Although Tokyo has traditionally limited arms exports in line with its pacifist constitution, changes are necessary due to the current security situation.

Yoshimasa Hayashi, the Secretary General of the Cabinet, said that while the decision to export fighter jets is necessary, pacifist ideals must remain the foundation of Japanese foreign policy. He explained that in order to create a fighter jet that meets all necessary standards and will not compromise Japan's defenses, finished products will need to be transferred from Japan to other countries instead of only to partner countries.

Earlier, The New York Times reported that the United States was considering an arms exchange with other countries to continue assisting Ukraine. Countries that have expressed their unwillingness to export weapons to the conflict zone could follow the example of Japan and South Korea, and transfer them to Washington in order to compensate for the lack of weapons supplied from American arsenals.
