OREANDA-NEWSKiev will require Berlin to introduce new sanctions against Moscow if Russia refuses to comply with the decision of the International Court of the Law of the Sea. This was stated by the Ukrainian ambassador to Germany, Andrei Melnik, according to the Ukrainian News Agency. Earlier, the Hamburg court, established in accordance with the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea, satisfied Ukraine’s demands for the immediate release of seafarers ’prisoners of war. Melnik called this decision a diplomatic victory.

At the end of November, three ships of the Ukrainian Navy entered the temporarily closed area of the territorial sea of Russia and moved from the Black Sea to the Kerch Strait. They maneuvered dangerously and did not submit to the demands of the Russian authorities. As a result, a court with 22 sailors and two officers of the Security Service of Ukraine were detained, a criminal case was opened on illegal crossing of the state border. The Russian authorities called the incident a provocation. As suggested by President Vladimir Putin, the special operation could be associated with a low rating of the Ukrainian leader Petro Poroshenko on the eve of the elections.

Kiev repeatedly demanded the immediate release of the sailors and appealed to international bodies. As a result, on May 25, a court in Hamburg met the requirements of Ukraine. In particular, the court ordered Russia to immediately release the sailors' prisoners of war and allow them to return to Ukraine. According to the court decision, Russia is obliged to execute his decision until June 25, 2019. The Russian Foreign Ministry noted that in the present case the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea cannot be used, Moscow will continue to defend its position.

Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky said that after the verdict, Russia had the opportunity to "unblock" negotiations with Kiev. Vladimir Dzhabarov, First Deputy Chairman of the Council of the Federation on International Affairs, commenting on Zelensky’s words, noted that the decision of the tribunal would completely discredit the Ukrainian leader and that the sailors would not leave Russia before the court’s verdict.
