OREANDA-NEWSRussia, the United States and other countries must develop a new strategic security framework that takes into account modern weapons. This was announced on Tuesday by US Secretary of State Michael Pompeo at a press conference following talks with Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov.

“With regard to strategic arms control, the question was about the Treaty on Measures to Further Reduce and Limit Strategic Offensive Arms, but this can't be the only issue”, he said. “The agreement came into force many years before, when the forces were very different. Arms systems, threats, risks of strategic stability were different from today". According to the Secretary of State, these aren't only missiles, bombers, submarines, warheads, but also many other weapons that can "create strategic instability".

"We believe that the dialogue should be expanded not only through the inclusion of China, but also expanded in terms of covering the full range of power tools that can create strategic instability", he noted. "These are strategic offensive weapons, medium and shorter-range missiles, all list of agreements concluded decades ago".
