OREANDA-NEWSIn 2019, Russia remained the leader in the number of complaints filed against it to the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR), the organization says in an annual report. According to statistics, at the end of the year, 59.8 thousand complaints were pending, of which more than 15 thousand (25.2%) were in Russia.

Turkey (9.2 thousand, or 15.5%) took the second place in the number of complaints to the ECHR, and Ukraine (8.8 thousand, or 14.8%) took the third. The leading places in the anti-rating were also Romania (7.9 thousand, or 13.2%) and Italy (3 thousand, or 5.1%). In previous years, Russia also ranked first in the number of complaints awaiting proceedings. At the end of 2017, their number amounted to almost 8 thousand out of 63.4 thousand, and 2018 - 11.7 thousand out of 56 thousand. Thus, over two years the number of complaints has almost doubled.

In 2019, as follows from the report, the ECHR issued 884 decisions, of which 198 were related to Russia. Moreover, in 186 cases, the court found that at least one article of the European Convention was violated. The most common were violations of the right to liberty and security of person (90), a fair trial (61) and a ban on degrading and inhuman treatment (57).
