OREANDA-NEWS. The Sars-CoV-2 coronavirus will stop spreading in waves when the proportion of people with immunity reaches 80%. This was stated by the president of the Robert Koch Institute, which is part of the Ministry of Health of Germany, Lothar Wheeler.

Earlier on Friday, the head of the German Ministry of Health, Jens Spahn, said that the third wave of the pandemic in Germany was broken, the incidence remained at a high level, but was declining.

Wheeler said at a May 7 press conference: “We cannot give up much of the restrictions until the proportion of people with immunity - acquired through vaccination or through a previous illness followed by vaccination - and until, when there is a British variant of the virus, it is definitely higher than 80 %. And then there will be new infections, there will be outbreaks, but there will be no waves. Then the pandemic will be under control. "

In this regard, Wheeler urged not to rush to lift the current restrictions on coronavirus.

The expert said: "You can't lift restrictions without a plan. Week by week the number of vaccinated people is growing, so some restrictions can be lifted. We need to vaccinate quickly and remove restrictions in a controlled manner. The higher the vaccination rate, the more infections we can prevent. The growing vaccination rate in foreseeable time will bring tangible relief to the situation. "
