OREANDA-NEWS. July 10, 2008. President of Russia Dmitry Medvedev suggests developing nuclear energy in the world.

During a press-conference after the last G8 summit in Japan, Medvedev said that nuclear energy might be actively used as a serious addition to existing sources of energy and that Russia and other G8 states had such capacities.

Medvedev said that the new generation of nuclear reactors was very safe. Besides, nuclear energy does not produce greenhouse gases and is ecologically friendly.

Medvedev is sure that there is a very good potential for multilateral cooperation in this field. And Russia is ready to make its contribution in the framework of relevant agreements.

The Russian President said that energy was in the spotlight during the summit. “Today, energy is one of the key topics,” Medvedev said.

The documents adopted during the summit point out that the situation in the energy sector is very complicated: the sector is quickly developing, traditional sources of energy are growing increasingly scarce while new sources are not appearing as quickly as they should.

As a result, the prices of oil, gas and other energy sources are growing.

The G8 have agreed to continue their cooperation on the basis of the energy security declaration adopted during their meeting in St.Petersburg.
