OREANDA-NEWS. March 16, 2010. Voronezh Mechanical Factory, Khrunichev Space Center subsidiary, starts inventing a new steering engine RD-0110R intended for Soyuz2-1В flight control. The engine is to be installed on the first sate of the carrier, together with NK-33 developed earlier. NK-33 series of engines was designed in 1970-s for N-1 launcher under the Lunar program. Significant number of engines still kept after cancellation of the program can serve for highly-reliable advanced launchers. Thus, Voronezh Factory and KBKhA commenced development of the steering engine to supplement NK-33 in order to minimize expenses for the first stage.

RD-0110R design stage is almost completed. Initial firing tests are scheduled in April-May timeframe. The 11D55 engine is to be used as a basic test bench.

Combination of RD-0110R and NK-33 will enhance reliability of the rockets. Development of the steering engine is to reduce timing for adjustments, and to make launcher production expenses 10 times lower.
