OREANDA-NEWSThe British government intends to follow the example of the United States and withdraw a third of its military contingent from Afghanistan. This was reported on Wednesday by The Times, citing informed sources in military circles.

According to the information received by the publication, it is planned that by mid-July, 330 out of 1,100 British troops permanently stationed in Afghanistan will leave the country. Almost all British troops are stationed in Kabul or in the vicinity of the capital. At the same time, as the Times notes, a small number of British commandos along with the US military are also located in other parts of the country, including the southern province of Helmand.

The source of the publication said that the withdrawal of British troops from the country will continue only if the Taliban movement (prohibited in the Russian Federation) fulfills the obligations stipulated by the agreement with the United States.

On February 29, a peace agreement was signed in Doha between the United States and the radical Taliban. According to the agreements, the United States, its allies and the coalition intend to withdraw all troops from Afghanistan within 14 months. In addition, Washington pledged to promote the removal of the Taliban from the UN sanctions list by May, and by August to abolish US restrictive measures against them.
