OREANDA-NEWS Britain may increase its natural gas exports to the European Union and thus reduce its dependence on Russian supplies. The Daily Telegraph newspaper wrote about it.

The publication says that an increase in gas supplies from the UK to the EU is expected in the next six months until September 2022. The fuel to the UK comes from Norway via a pipeline across the North Sea and by tanker in the form of LNG from around the world. According to National Grid, it could be diverted through pipelines to Belgium and the Netherlands.

Russia accounts for up to 46% of Europe's natural gas supply, and many, including Germany and France, understand that in the short term there is no alternative to Russian energy.

According to the statistical service Statista, in 2020 alone, imports accounted for about 84 percent of natural gas in the EU; a year earlier the figure was 90 percent. In 1990, the European Union imported about 52 percent of its natural gas consumption.

The geography of Europe's energy supplies is extensive. In addition to Russia, which is the main importer, the United States, Qatar, Nigeria and many other countries supply gas, oil and coal to the Old World. The EU hopes to exclude Russian gas from this list.
