OREANDA-NEWSThe United States has completed ratification of the protocol to the North Atlantic Treaty on North Macedonia’s accession to NATO. This was announced on Sunday by US Secretary of State Michael Pompeo on his Twitter page.

In June 2018, the Foreign Ministers of Macedonia and Greece on the shore of Lake Prespa, along which the border between the two countries passes, signed an agreement on a new official name for the former Yugoslav republic. The Prespan agreement provides for the use of the name “Republic of Northern Macedonia”. This agreement was supposed to resolve not only a long-standing dispute with Athens about the name of the Balkan Republic, which coincides with the name of the northern Greek region, but also open Skopje to NATO and the European Union. In mid-February of this year, the Prespan Agreement entered into force.

Most countries have already ratified the protocol on admission of Northern Macedonia to NATO. A summit of the member states of the alliance will be held in London on December 3-4.
