OREANDA-NEWS. The United States and its allies are less protected from Russia because of the withdrawal from the Treaty on Open Skies, Bob Menendez, senior Democrat of the US Senate, said.

“The administration’s decision to abandon the Treaty fits into a broader pattern of discarding arms control and non-proliferation agreements, raising deep concerns among our allies about our commitment to their security,” the parliamentarian stated. Menendez also stressed that Trump’s decision to withdraw from the Treaty on Open Skies allows to speak of a violation of American law. “In the 2020 National Defense Authorization Act, Congress reaffirmed its support for the Open Skies Treaty and specifically mandated the administration justify a withdrawal four months before any formal notification of withdrawal took place,” the politician explained. He called on the incoming administration of Joe Biden to rejoin the treaty.
