OREANDA-NEWS. An unknown person shot dead the President of Haiti, Jovenel Moise, in his private residence. This was said by the Prime Minister of the country Claude Joseph.

The head of the government said that a group of unidentified persons attacked the residence of the leader of the state at about one o'clock in the morning from July 6 to 7. One of them inflicted a fatal gunshot wound on Moise. It is noted that some of the attackers spoke in Spanish. Joseph stressed that he condemns this «odious, inhuman and barbaric act». According to him, the security situation in the country is under control.

Moise has served as President of Haiti since February 7, 2017. He was awarded the Order of the Brilliant Jade with a Large Cordon by the President of Taiwan Tsai Ing-wen in May 2018. Tsai highly appreciated the economic initiatives taken by the Moise government.
